AI Can Accelerate Software Development — But It Cannot Replace Technical Competence
AI can create significant efficiency gains in software development, but in mission-critical systems, poor implementation can translate directly into financial, operational, and regulatory risk. As adoption accelerates, technical competence, controls, and domain expertise remain essential.

There is an ongoing discussion these days about the impact of AI (recent Bill Gates essay and David Heinemeier Hansson “Round 2” podcast with Lex Fridman), and we want to add our perspective as well.
Today, Fireship, an infotainment channel for software professionals, released a video explaining the $440 million software mistake made in the early 2000s.
What this story highlights — and what is even more relevant today — is that software quality matters. Unless we are talking about an unsophisticated landing page or a UX/UI prototype, experienced and knowledgeable software engineers and IT specialists remain necessary.
There are areas where reliance on blind vibe coding or automated code generation is simply unacceptable. Think about trade execution, algorithmic and high-frequency trading, wealth management systems, personal banking, payment processing, healthcare, energy, transportation, and logistics. In all of these areas, software mistakes can lead to multimillion-dollar direct losses, lawsuits, regulatory consequences, operational disruption, or significant opportunity costs.
As we move into this period of uncertainty, the deployment of AI technologies can, on the one hand, create tremendous efficiency gains. At the same time, if AI is applied blindly, without proper controls, domain expertise, and technical oversight, the consequences can be devastating.
